The central idea of sustainability is the triple bottom line People-Planet-Profit. However, most approaches merely touch upon the People-part and focus on the environmental and economic aspects of sustainability. The approach to WELL Building StandardTM turns this upside down, and focuses on the effect of the built environment on people.
WELL Accredited Professionals (WELL AP) are an exclusive group with demonstrated expertise in an exciting and growing field. We are proud to have two of them at CBRE: Tim Habraken and Terry Mak.
Tim explains his motivation for becoming a WELL AP in early September 2016:
“The human-centered approach to sustainability not only strikes a nerve of the time in which health, wellbeing, work-life-balance, etc., are all ‘hot topics’, but it also allows for new ways of looking at the role the built environment plays for its occupants. Besides this, it opens up new ways of looking at the economic side of things. Did you know that 90% of the costs of the average organization are people costs (such as salaries and benefits), 9% are rental costs and 1% are energy costs?”
So we should put aside Sustainability and focus on Wellbeing instead?
According to Tim it’s certainly not an either/or: “Sustainability and Wellbeing go hand in hand and strengthen each other. In practice, predominantly we see that projects that are looking at WELL also are achieving BREEAM or LEED certification. Combining these certifications creates a synergy effect.”
Terry, when did you become a WELL AP?
“I became one of the seven WELL APs in the Netherlands in early December 2016, and I believe Tim and I are currently the only ones based in Amsterdam!”
And what is your main motivation to pursue wellness in the workplace?
“As an interior designer and workplace strategist, my motivation is to create experiences that express organization’s values, engages talent, and inspires people to perform at their best. And for me, what’s really exciting is to consider all the different ways a well-designed workplace experience can nudge people to eat healthier, stay hydrated, be more active, and care for their mental well-being as well. While Health & Wellness is an end in itself, it is also a means to improve engagement and performance. This makes it absolutely relevant to every progressive organization that wants to elevate their team’s potential.”
