Waiting lists for in-patient care continue to rise, as does the number of senior citizens looking for suitable accommodation. Active commitment to the development of new residential care locations is needed in order to meet this demand. Moreover, new housing in this segment can ease pressure on the rest of the residential market.

The market is becoming more professional. More and more healthcare organisations are acknowledging that good real estate can play a substantial part in their success. The number of small-scale residential care locations has doubled in the past five years, and outdated ones have closed their doors.

Healthcare real estate report H1 2018 – Growing shortage of free-sector sheltered housing

More and more senior citizens want to live in sheltered housing. In the unregulated sector, however, there is currently a shortfall of 32,000 units. This is forecast to rise to 52,000 in 2040. The most acute shortfalls are in the Utrecht, greater Amsterdam, greater Rijnmond (Rotterdam) and Veluwe regions, as well as parts of Noord-Brabant.
