Amidst national narratives of urban revival and suburban stagnation, 2017 in Greater Philadelphia’s retail sector was a year of suburban success stories. Presumably inspired by last year’s opening of the heralded King of Prussia Town Center, ambitious mixed-use projects began to create exciting live, work, and play spaces on the suburban peripheries of Philadelphia.
While South Jersey stole the show in Q3 2017, Delaware shone in Q4 2017. Despite an overall dip in occupancy rates, Greater Philadelphia’s retail sector continued to perform strongly in the reputed headwinds of e-retail. Clicks-to-bricks retailers emerged in Philadelphia and its suburbs, signaling physical retail’s continued importance to the region.
