HEALTH EMPOWERMENT INCREASES THROUGH THE USE OF SMART WRISTBAND

Scientific research confirms that users of  smart wristbands feel more empowered when it comes to managing their health. Besides this, they are also more committed to their personal health goals.

It may sound logical, but up till now, there were no empirical studies substantiating this presumption. Ph.D. candidate Elizabeth Nelson is changing this. Alongside fellow researchers Tibert Verhagen and Matthijs Noordzij, she provides a scientific contribution to this debate with the article "Health Empowerment through activity trackers: An empirical smart wristband study".

Smart wristbands are devices worn on the wrist that constantly monitor an individual’s activity, inactivity, light, and deep sleep, and feedback the information to an application on a mobile phone or tablet. The increasing popularity of activity trackers shows a remarkable shift in human-computer interaction. Individuals more and more seem willing to wear a device that constantly tracks and stores health-related metrics.

Smart wristbands ensure not only that people can exercise control over their health, they also have a positive impact on users' health empowerment. By health empowerment in this study refers to the conviction of a person that he/she has a significant impact on his/her health. The extent to which a person feels empowered, in turn, has an impact on the degree to which a person commits to personal health goals.
