MediaMarkt is on a very tight schedule in its search for a new location in the heart of Rotterdam: an office with a new interior design concept that facilitates the working practices of the company’s employees.
The challenge Faced with an expiring lease, the German consumer electronics company is keen to move within six months. Its ambition is to exchange its conventional, closed-office concept for a new approach that features a variety of anchor points, open and flexible workplaces, and an interior design that reflects MediaMarkt’s identity.
Our approach CBRE explored the technical and spatial potential of various offices in Rotterdam. De Rotterdam, a building in one of the city’s more striking locations, offered extensive opportunities for an open office concept with a strong collaborative focus. The entire project had to be completed in six months: from research to design and from tendering to execution. Time was saved by simultaneously designing the new working concept and an interior to match. Meanwhile the tender process was accelerated and the work schedule extended beyond standard business hours. The painting work was done at night, for example, to take advantage of downtime at the location. The same applied to the transport of materials.
The project CBRE worked on the MediaMarkt project with a broad multidisciplinary team and made considerable efficiency gains by switching rapidly between the various departments. The team conducted a location and workplace analysis, designed an innovative working concept and a new office interior, handled purchasing and project management, and supported site management. In addition, the Workplace Consultancy Department arranged for staff at the Rotterdam office to visit the new location at an early stage, thus generating widespread support for the new workplace concept.
Results A huge internal staircase forms a visible connection between the six floors and is intended to encourage employees to interact. The entrance and the central reception desk are on one of the central floors and every floor has its own meeting place. The stunning view of the Erasmus bridge is used to great effect, with various types of flexible work spaces situated along the facade. MediaMarkt’s corporate identity is clearly expressed in the interior. Walls, cabinets and lockers situated around the core are inspired by the company’s current or future retail interiors.
CBRE’s integrated approach enabled MediaMarkt to move into the new location on the desired date: a pleasant surprise given the tight schedule! In a survey of MediaMarkt’s employees the new location scored an outstanding 9.5 out of 10.
