A landmark in the Rotterdam streetscape, but a bastion inside. Fresh impetus was needed when a section of the iconic Delftse Poort building beside Central Station became vacant. CBRE decided to give part of the building back to the city. The plinth is transformed into an urban retreat, with exclusive shops and a big restaurant. That brings more light into the dark, introvert building. The glass façade to the station is opened, a rooflight is enlarged, and big lighting elements are fitted. With respect for the architecture of Abe Bonnema, soft and organic forms are introduced to make the interior less austere.
